An amazing account of what is going on in Ethiopia. We need such kind of writings to get to know what these guys are doing. This is absolutely the main reason why the inflation is skyrocketing every other day. It is really as easy to read and understand piece any ordinary person like me. But, it fails to include how party owned big businesses are doing against the destitute people of our country. We well know that it is a fake 10% and more of economic growth that we have been told by our ‘leaders’ now cheaters. An economy which doesn’t even feed the children dying of starvation.

Besides Dr. birhanu’s account I suspect that the gov’t unable to control the staggering inflation and due to huge budget deficit might have been involved in printing out currency leading to an over supply of cash to the market.

Dr. Birhanu’s article is good, and every body knows the dire situation inside Ethiopia. But this is not what you call a “Must read” article at all.
A “Must read” article provide new info or new insight ar other relevant things that go with the issue at hand. Adjectives, colors, and Loud-titles are effective with the illitrate, but not with the college educated!

    12. alemayehu tadesse Says:

    13. Zheim Says:

Sorry I can not understand written amharic, even if I am from ethiopian origin, but I want to say I am always ammzed to see all these kind of reaction focusing on
      -Zenawi
      -the ethiopian political parties
      - the election
      etc etc etc………
Not even mentionning even ONE time the REAL origin of the problem. Zenawi is just a puppet. What is important is not the puppet but who controll him ->
      the IMF
      the World Bank
      multinational compagnies operating in Ethiopa
the third world DEBT that is completely ILLEGITIMATE

Here are some analysis on the economical issues:

The next one is from Joseph Stiglitz who had worked at the IMF and is now a Nobel prize Winner:

If political activist, political parties, leaders etc. do not have this in mind, if they do not asses the REAL origin of the problem, and keep the same ties, and if they continue this way, let me tell you that it is sure and certain that nothing will ever change.

    14. Setitu Says:

      Abebech,

You hit the nail right on the head, you know. And 99.9% percentage of Ethiopians are? College educated? Give me a break. This is the first attempt I saw from the Ethiopian academics of trying to reach the masses, and explain an economic issue in layman’s terms to the majority of the population.

Believe me, some economic matters aren’t that easy to understand even to many college educated people. This article breaks it down for all those people and that is what makes it excellent.

    16. lilleswed Says:

People commenting on this site are really strange! My moral doesn’t allow it to call them MORONS, but it’s also sad to see them telling to others that they don’t know anything!! It’s known that banks use the clients money. Of course it’s sad that corruption is at it’s ugly stage in Ethiopia and few are of course expersts of imports , thanks to EPRDF. but the article doesn’t teach me anything new rather negative, the poor is not robbed, and Ethiopian people doesn’t have the habbit to destory what stands there and start again every 20 years. Rather they are trying to use it as their propoganda to try to brain wash peoples mind. simple politics game.

    17. Setitu Says:

      lilleswed,

Of course, it is very obvious that, banks use people’s money to give out loans. That is a normal practice and consumers acknowledge that when they go to deposit their monies. However, that does not mean the banks get to do whatever they like with the money. Government owned banks, if not all banks, have the responsibility to make profit. Currently, not only are they not making profits, but losing money - public money! They must adjust interest rates to reflect inflation, but they are not doing that. Furthermore, they are lending money in illegal ways to help people with connections prosper. This not only leads to losing public money, but creates an unfair ground for genuine and honest business people. That is why it is called robbery.

In addition, the reason the Ethiopian people have “the habit to destroy things every 20 years and start all over again” is because in such a society where unjust systems are implemented and a few chosen people are the beneficiaries, people generally tend to believe justified to take over what those people have made. That is natural.

That is why Ginbot 7 has been calling on the government to come to talks with the opposition and the large majority of the population they represent, so that we avert such a crisis.

Revolutions and the shaking down of things that usually follow them are direct and natural results of prolonged suppressions. History has thought us that over and over. It is upon us if we refuse to learn.
