UDJ founding members18 June 2008 — After some disruptions by Zenawi’s forces, in collaboration with Ato Hailu/Abayneh group, the Unity UDJ has held a successful meeting and elected the party’s executive body today, sources said. The meeting should have not been rescheduled for today without a direct involvement of the so-called elders led by prof. Ephrem Issak, a trend harshly criticized by some observers. The General Assembly has elected 60 council members and 15 more reserve members. The following are Executive Members we obtained so far. To all UDJ leadership and supporters, toady not only your parents but your motherland and fellow countrymen are proud of you!

To all –Woyane and their cadres who are true enemies of Ethiopia, the shameless Hailu Shawl clan and diehard EPRPs who behind time and a political cancer for our country. “Kinijit is dead”, “Kinijit is broken beyond repair”, “Kinijit is hopeless” some Diaspora pundits proclaimed. Well, today June 18, 2008, these so called pundits were proven to be wrong.

The Kinijit executives were incarcerated for two years. The name of Kinijit was illegally given to individuals. Some among the leaders acted inappropriately and damaged for a while the credibility of the organization.

In spite of all these facts, Kinijit executives picked up the pieces, slowly, methodically and with great wisdom brought all supporters of Kinijit together, re-organized the party and came out unified, more stronger, more civilized to bring democratic changes in Ethiopia. All these are being done under a new name Unity for Democracy and Justice, which is now an embodiment of KINIJIT. Today is a testimony that Kinijit is not dead, but an organization that came out stronger under the UDJ. Today is a testimony that the spirit of Kinijit now Andenet is alive and working.

“The Peaceful struggle is not working. The UDJ has to disband and let Ginbot 7 take the torch, What the UDJ is doing is begging the weyanes and living in slavery…” some alluded because they failed to have patience and weak that they easily give up.

Well, today, these people were proven dead wrong. The peaceful struggle is working and Ethiopians are peacefully organizing themselves in all regions, to build a free, democratic and UNITED Ethiopia.
Today there is a message for all Ethiopians all over the world, that persistence and determination pays off and that giving-up is not an option. Today we have crossed one giant step forward and therefore celebrate.

Tomorrow the next journey (possibly more difficult one) will start. We must all be ready to join our Ethiopian brothers and sisters who are currently not only talking but walking the walk.

Today is a clear indication that something real is taking place in Ethiopia. Let not those who may have ulterior motives, discourage and confuse us. Let us all be ready for the next step, to peacefully change Ethiopia to a better future.

We have brave democracy soldiers within Ethiopia from all corners of our society. They came from Addis Ababa, Gonder, Wellega, Tigray, Afar, Jijiga, Dembidollo, Assossa, Gore, Welkite, Dejen, Merhabete ….They are women and they are men. They are from the urban areas; they are also from rural Ethiopia. They are Christians; they are also Muslims. They are elders; they are also Youngs. Let us all join them in solidarity and let us together bring the resurrection of Ethiopia.

To conclude my message, I congratulate Judge Birtukan Mideksa, Eng Gizachew Shiferaw, Dr Yacob Woldemariam, Dr Hailu Araya and Ato Asrat Tasse for the trust they have received from the General Assembly. I hope and pray they give top priority on the main crisis Ethiopia is facing now (the plight of our starving people) and swiftly work with local non-governmental agencies to facilitate aid and fundraising events. What need to come first has to come first.

Being a leader is being a servant. As they commit themselves to serve the people, they need our support. Unless we all stand with them in solidarity they cannot do it alone.

      TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT!

Now things are moving on all directions to create political party that stand firm and shade light on the broken hearts of all Ethiopians. We all support their ideas, commitment and vision they have to the future Ethiopia. That should be the criteria we need to evaluate the parties.

I think by now two parties with the same purpose and aim seems moving on the right direction to lead the Ethiopian to the dreamed vision. Wherever they are, how they did it does not matter. What matter should be for me is can they bring a change in the political struggle that the west entertained and we dreamed of.

The G7 has a positive thinking of mobilizing the whole Ethiopians irrespective of their differences. To me they are doing great job by bringing to the floor what is called healthy dialog between and aamong Ethiopians. If the society discusses its issue there is nothing which can not be solved.

The UDJ is locally registered and preferred to struggle in Ethiopia and hopefully they will do their level best to come up with strong organizational structure and rule of law among themselves and create modern political party that people should rely on it.

So, we should support both of them to fullfill our dream support each other and work together and bring change in a near future time.

May God be with all Ethiopian political parties that honestly dedicate themseleves for the true cause of the people. Amen.

I am realy happy with the effort of UDJ party has done so far via fire road and sew bela mengist(meles). I can understand how much struggle and difficulty you will face again in the future due to lack of democracy in Ethiopia.

I support UDJ and Ginbot 7 parties equally from my heart. I still have the sprit of Kinjit in my heart from both parites. These two paries founded to get democracy for Ethiopia via any means.

If we fail to support both parites we wont achive any thing or we will buy more time for woyane to kill our people and destroy Ethiopia.

Pls lets stop blaming these parties and stand beside them, they all suffered under woyane hand for our people and Ethiopia. This is a short time history. How can we forget and start blaming UDJ or Ginbot 7 parties, its very disappointed. Shame on US. I personally dont have any confidence to criticize these parties.

May God help us to unit and make us one heart to bring democracy for our country.

      God bless Ethiopia

    28. Woube Says:

The formation of UDJ, I see it as a positive development, however, we have to be a bit careful not get very excited, because they have to prove that they are up to the job. The last three years have shown that Woyane is capable of doing everything bad to stop a genuine democracy prevailing in Ethiopia. The assessment of Ginbot7 is more realistic than anyone one of the groups functioning. It seems clear now that Kinijit is reduced to three groups. One has decided to go back to the dark age , the other one want to recycle the already tested political reality and the third one is trying to go forward at least with new initiative, reminding me the classical western film the Good the Bad and the Ugly, which one is which? well, i will leave it to the reader to make her/his mind. Finally I see all inclusive broad political platform a way forward to bit Woyane and ensure democracy and the rule of law.

Ethiopian Review is like once Reporter was in Ethiopia. They pretend to be very critical to Woyane/Shabia. They win large segment of readers through the news they are supplied by woyane/shabia.

But when the critical time comes they side to woyane/shabia. Reporter has done this immediately after 1997 EC election and it is still in print while almost all private presses are banned. Ethiopian Review is now disclosing itself at the formation of Andinet.

They think foolishly that all their readers would sway with them forever. They are inept to think that people see what is really on the ground.

      To Hell with Woyane/Shabia.

    39. azarya Says:

      Yes, UDJ’s birth is significant!
      Kuchiye
      June 19, 2008

In a country where abuse of power and gross incompetence surpass hitherto unseen proportions, it is crucially important Ethiopians get leadership of a resident political party that they can trust. The June 17, 2008 General Assembly of Andnet (UDJ) gave them exactly that.

Technically speaking, June 17 did not herald the birth of a brand new party - the whole world including EPRDF knows that. What it did is proclaim the re-birth of Kinijit, the renaissance of a popular movement that was cut short by the unwise and still paranoid tendencies of a government that is at odds even with its own interests.

Popular movements have this thing that unsettle tyrants, even more so when they are organized under the banner of peaceful struggle. Look, for example, at EPRDF who used the silliest pretext to disrupt the UDJ GA meeting of June 14. If its leaders had a semblance of wisdom or a shred of commitment for the advancement of democracy in Ethiopia, they would have stepped in and let the GA proceed scoring some points for the benefit of their international backers who they care very much about. EPRDF’s silly action gave us a couple of clues on its fears . One, it is afraid UDJ will fall into the popular embrace of Ethiopians once again. Two, it is uncomfortable with a viable opposition from inside which could turn into a pain in the neck. Three, there will be a revival of pressure on EPRDF from international donors as UDJ escalates its peaceful ways. Four, with the worsening economic and political situation in Ethiopia, the opposition will have compelling reason to work under a minimum platform and increase the pressure on the government.

EPRDF’s attempt at disrupting the GA also ended up further energizing the spirit of the assembly participants, unsettling the diplomatic community, angering the general population and exposing the vulnerability of a government that tries so hard to portray images of a macho man.

There is a certain truth that any action by EPRDF or the dictates of the international community will never change. Ethiopians are determined to see their fight for democracy and good governance succeed no matter what the cost is and no matter how long the journey takes.

UDJ will stay the course of peaceful struggle and conduct its program in a much more organized manner. It will work for lasting victory guided by well-considered short and long term goals. It will leave no stone unturned to bring about national consensus and national reconciliation. It will stay vigilant and fight threats that work against the unity and territorial integrity of the country.

UDJ will be by the side of the drought victim, by the displaced citizen, by the side of the young and the old that suffer from a justice system that fails to serve the interest of all Ethiopians. It will be by the side of Ethiopians anywhere and everywhere. It will organize the people under the hallowed banner of democracy, justice and national unity confident that the general population, its members and leaders are behind it.

      Yes, UDJ’s rebirth is significant!

To all readers we also need to fight Elias of the Ethiopian Review along with Meles and Esaias .No one doubt now he is an agent of the EPLF and has nothing to do with our cause, An Ethiopian cause. Please you better refrain meddling in our cause, you can serve your masters. It will not be far when your snaky toungue begins biting Dr. Birhanu whom you rever for the time being. He will be ashamed of you with what you posted today. 46. Assefa Says:

      To Girma Kassa,

You have to be very careful when you talk about peaceful struggle. Yes, we want to have a peaceful struggle when there is a freedom of speech, freedom of public meetings, freedom of writings, the rule of law, able to demonstrate against the dictator, etc. In the absence of all these, what alternatives you can suggest? Do we have to beg TPLF through Shemagele whenever Andenet to carry out certain activities. I do not blame the leaders for doing what they did to proceed with their meeting. If they had to resist, they knew that they would have been in prison for good. In my opinion, there must a better way to bring changes in Ethiopia. Maybe we have to revisit and read the history of South African struggle under the leadership of Nelson Mandela. It is worthhile to look carefully the role of African National Congress (ANC) during their struggle. It is very important that we have to stop antagonizing each other. Let us focus all our efforts to kick-out Meles and his Party by uniting all opposition organizations including even EPRP by all means necessary.

    47. tesf Says:

Can Birtukan ask for peacrful demonstration. She has many reasons to do it.
      1, Sudan issue.
      2, Famine
      3, inflation
All this and Ogaden ,Somalia are very sensitive issues where people of Ethiopia want show their anger and frustration to the world. That will be her test showing TPLF to the world and motivating people of Ethiopia for change. Will that happen.Dont waste your energy on her.TPLF must be out of their mind to let do her job and i assure you if she is not sold out to TPLF, she is brain washed by US to believe things will improve. Imagine the number of people will show up if she calls for a meeting at Meskel Square. That will be enermouse!!!!!!!Will TPLF give a window of opportunity to Ethiopia people for this kind of inncident/ Never. They know the situation is boiling, any slip up will burn their face. The point is, she is playing against The people of Ethiopia. Look, The opposition who Ethiopians adore, Democraticly elected, “critical of the goverment TPLF” and female, Woww,,,,,,She is a poster lady for TPLF. You will be watching her in Western medias crying about her struggle. That will be the end of us, and we will be crying for long time with Birtukan. Get your klinex ready. She is a duck with her oldies friends. One question i have for all of you is,
what makes you think TPLF can compete with any other opposition not alone Kinijit. What is your reason ?Are they ready to share the power, How is these going to work. Bring US back in the table for forming coalition power, like Kenya. It is all calculated by TPLF and US, soon we will have coalition party. If we follow her, we are doomed. They know it, we Know it, the world knows it . Please dont play with your own head. Birtukan is a life support for TPLF.

    48. Mike Says:

Things in Ethiopia are becoming worest and the space for peacefull struggle is narrower. Peacefull struggle nees proper organazing and diciplined and commited leaders and followers. To become a strong party and challenge the current despotic regime does take a long time and efforts. The problem is if UDJ takes a simple step that seems challenging the regime, the Meles regime never tolerates. The regime has got a very good lesson during 2005 election and it is taking every steps to narrow any really opposition.
I appreciate the commitment of the leaders of the new party. But i am not convinced of their means of struggle to bring democracy to our beloved country.
