Professor Mesfin’s presentation at Washington DC Marriott on Sunday, 6 July has provoked anger among the Ethiopian Diaspora. Scores are negatively reacting on his reactions to some public questions.
In his presentations, prof. Mesfin seemed to have mixing his personal conflict with that of national issues. Mesfin has tried to ridiculing the groups that have decided to fight the regime through all means necessary. “It seems that he wanted to attack an individual at the expense of the struggle.” An ardent supporter of Unity for Democracy and Justice Party - UDJ told EMF. “We hope this wouldn’t be the position of UDJ.” He added.
Among the paradoxes from the views on the Sunday meeting is that the good professor equates the Meles regime with the fascists, but he couldn’t able to convince the public how a fascist regime can be toppled only through peaceful way. He went to the extent of making fun out of those groups who said the regime would never give up power by peaceful means.
Prof. Mesfin said that the regime will never give up power because it has blood in his hands but he still dares to fight and win by his single formula. Only peaceful way! “What does that mean?” says a critic. “In a country where people are denied of their ‘constitutional’ rights… The last UDJ assembly can be referred here as an example. A meeting that is held through mediation by elders.” He added.
The other thing that angered the public is his equivocal failure to accept pluralism, by vehemently opposing to those who planed a different strategy to bring about democracy and rule of law in Ethiopia.
Prof. Mesfin is entitled to his views. He can do whatever he thinks is good and viable but he shouldn’t undermine and attack the views of others. By doing so he will not only loose supporters, he will also divert public attention from the mercenary TPLF regime. Listen to prof. Mesfin’s presentation here.

The mischaracterization of the Sunday meeting with the UDJP members and the quoting of professor Mesfin out of context; that was started by Elias Kifle has reached EMF too. It is really sad that when the free press in Ethiopia is muzzled by the despicable Meles regime; the so called free press and websites in the Diaspora are trying to muzzle opinions that are not in line with that of Ginbot7. Elias Kifle has started censoring opinions that are critical of Ginbot 7 as well as Elias’ fixation with the Eritrean dictator Issayas Afeworki. Looks like the formula is wherever ER leads, EMF follows and hence this mendacious article about the Marriot meeting with Professor Mesfin and the UDJP General Secretary. It is ironic that any TPLF cadre can post any trash on this forum masquerading as an Oromo, the editor has banned individuals with nick names that are not totally smitten by his the darling Ginbot 7.
Getting back to the meeting with Professor Mesfin; the ER editor, Elias Kifle have been posting mild threats and his followers have been cheering him to force the professor to abandon peaceful struggle and ‘to join Ginbot 7’, the only game in town, according to these wise men. I have followed the meeting with Professor Mesfin and couldn’t believe my eyes when I read the screaming article on ER ‘Woyanie Not the Enemy-Professor Mesfin Woldemariam’. Obviously, none of us were that impressed with the journalistic talents of Elias Kifle, people rather admired his gutsy attitude at digging dirt and times create it when none existed. I believe with this article Elias has clearly crossed the red line and needs to be told. He is being told all right through his blogs but since he has this uncanny talent for censoring opinions contrary to his own no one else is able to see it and that is despicable.
Obviously no one has any issue if Elias tries supports Ginbot 7 and tries to promote its cause; but when he is trying to shove it down people’s throat, that is crossing the redline. I know most of us, with the attention span of a house fly, may not remember this, but Elias Kifle tried to shove Lidetu Ayalew down our throats in the aftermath of the May 2005 election and look where his darling boy Lidetu is today. People flock to ER to read the aggregated news and not Elais’ unbaked opinion. When people want insightful news analysis there is always Ethiomedia and excellent blogs like Dagmawi and Ethiopundit.
It is foolish for website editors like ER and EMF to think they are the salt of the earth and can bend the truth and get away with it. And what is the idea of a blog if you are censoring people with opposing views any way? I have to change my nick five times before I was able to bypass the crude censorship mechanism to post this article and that is a shame! Since ER is moderating all postings manually, none or my postings could make it to his blog and I am giving up posting and reading any of the junk on his website.

I am in complete agreement with Mamo above that the misreport on ER and EMF about the Sunday meeting with UDJP members was a distortion and a sham. If anything, I was worried about Professor Mesfin’s safety when he returns to Ethiopia, after such a virulent attack on the TPLF fascist regime. Always true to his nature, Professor Mesfin called the current situation in the opposition camp as he saw it, by starting his speech with a beautiful and timely prayer. I know for some the truth is a bitter pill but need to swallow it nevertheless. He never attacked any individual or groups per se, just gave a dose of reality on his former Kinijit party members starting from Lidetu down to current day UDJP. I know most of his analysis and twisted irony as well as the depth of his political and philosophical analysis could be lost some of us, but to characterize the Professor as a TPLF supporter is a deliberate distortion being perpetrated by some groupings and their head honcho Elias Kifle of ER.
Yes Professor Mesfin did not mince words about his views on armed struggle since he has been waging peaceful struggle through three different regimes and paid a price for it and he is not even bitter about it. I also think the anecdote in LA about the tiff between Mesfin and a proponent of the armed struggle might have touched a nerve with the Internet generals, admirals and field marshals. Well, like they say the truth is stranger than fiction. All the good professor is saying to the opposition camp is, be it peaceful or armed, where is the meat? That is put up or shut up!
I see some remnants of the Hailu Shaul supporters are trying to raise their dead heads from the boggy marshes of ignominy. Don’t you guys realize that Hailu Shaul’s name is toxic in Ethiopia and will remain so till his dying days?

In my opinion, most people who write on this website as well as all other print and broadcast media dealing with Ethiopian politics seem to have very little knowledge of Prof Mesfin. I have known the Professor for the last 35 years. To put it mildly he has always been the most controversial person. During his tenure at Haile Selassie University (the current Addis Ababa University) he has always been, one way or another, opposed to the Ethiopian Students Movement or no positive contribution except criticizing everybody. He was simply at odds with many of the then scholars including Drs. Eshetu Chole, Assefa etc. One contemporarey of his told me he is a man with no integrity - his arguments are always very destructive and “Oh yes” very Power Hungry - A critic simply to promote his ego. I don’t know where this “great Professor” label came from…. maybe good enough to satify his insatiable ego but that is far from the truth!
To fill his power thirst the emperor gave him a position of District Administrator (Awraja Geji). He was then tested and labeled as a man who can talk but with no substance and he returned to the University. Again during the tenure of the Dergue, he assumed “Mermari Commission” position and got very close to Mengistu - by condemning intellectuals who dwarfed his ego and to win favor from Mengistu. Because of his lack of integrity, Mengistu also denied him a position of power. BTW he was very close to Mengistu!!!
He is a very bitter man whose chauvinistic statements against Oromos, Somalis and all other non-amara ethnic group is well documented.
It is this man who is now trying to put down those who have put their lives on the line to realize a free and democratic Ethiopia.
Could this be his chauvinistic awakening???
Long live the progressive leaders of tomorrow’s Democratic Ethiopia - including OLF, ONLF, Patriotic Front, Guinbot7 etc etc.

i have a good respect for prof and i have been the weekly visitor of him and other kinjit leaders during their imprisoment in kality.However immediately after their release,i am becoming unconfortable with some of the prof interviewes and articles.To mention one,when asked about the problem happend in the leaders of kinjit,he told us and gave us this picture that there is no any problem among them but only between Eng. Hailu and Dr. Birhanu(Yesiltan Shikucha).since the prof has “good respect” among the supporters of kinijit, the people temporarly accepted this assertion as truth and i rember how this badly splits the supporters of kinjit into two groups until the time the fact has revealed clearly that the prblrm was between those grops who want to exercise demoracy with in the leadership and those who oppose that.In other words it was between the current UDJ party(Pro Democracy) and eng Hailus group(Anti demoracy).But the good professor told us another thing.
What i want say is that professor should think twice before speaking out something which will have a great negative effect in the current ethiopians strugle for demoracy.We sholud learn to say NO to such asasach amelekaketoch.

I attended the meeting from the beginning to the end. It was full of ideas from the very bottom of the hearts of both Prfessor Mesfin and Ato Asrat and it was very sucessful. We have learned a lot how to use peaceful struggle not only to fight dictators in Arat Kilo but also small ideas that always try to shot down big ideas/minds.

Please stop fighting each other. Prof Mesfine has the right to say PMZ is an angel (to be able to breath oxygen when he is back to Ethiopia). You may not agree with his attitude but don’t waste time posting such articles to create a recipe for division. Do we have to share everything we don’t agree with the whole world????? It is not good to attack Prof Mesfin like this.It is difficult to believe that Prof Mesfin be the promotter of TPLF.He is old and now at the final age.Prof Mesfin never dared and tried to sell his soul in the previous times.He never did during his young age.EMF,please be carful when you label someone as a traitor.Prof Mesfin is an icon of Ethiopian for decades.I wish him good luck and to speak the truth all the times.At the same time I support the Ginbot 7 movement too.

I am just astonished at your breathtaking claim that Professor Mesfin lacks personal integrity so much so that even the Dergue has to shun him and deny him power. The amazing thing is people, who have been part of the Dergue and abandoned it later tell us otherwise; that is raising your left fist crisply in socialist salutation and admiring Mengistu’s tennis strokes were the only ticket to poer and better grazing pastures. Please read Major Dawit ‘s book entitled ‘To Kill a Generation’. And please never ever mention Mengistu and integrity in the same breath again, ever. Please remember, Mengistu contrary to his posturing as a patriot and constant blistering as a resolute courageous man; when he faced with the inevitable truth, folded the palace carpet and ran to Harare.
Mesfin has been always a patriotic Ethiopian and is not one to appease secessionists like EPLF and blind leftist like Eshetu Chole and his ilk. The Ethiopian leftists with their slavish worship of Albania and their love for Mao’s quotations , have their ways for over thirity five years now and look where the country is today. The Ethiopian left of the 60s and 70s would have been better served if it had listened to wise men like Mesfin. It could have avoided its untimely and violent demise and/or exodus and the country could have avoided plagues like EPLF, TPLF, EPRP, OLF, ONLF and so on and so forth. We also would have all the victims of the red terror and the white terror youth, as grown men and women, contributing the development of Ethiopia. Dear all:
As always I am writing my comment in EMF for ER has become basically the same as “walta information center” a place where only one view is posted.
I thank EMF for at least entertaining different views and showing professional journamilism.
Back to Prof Mesfin’s speech. This is one of the best speech I have ever heard. What we need in Ethiopia is a reaslitic, mature and visionary approach that can bring us more to come together and create wedges within Ethiopia.
The politics that is basically based ONLY on cursing and villifying the weyanes does not work. The only solution is dialog, reconciliation , peace.
Some may not like it or may be upset by prof Mesfin. These people are like the editor of ER. However, the question we have to this people is :” WHAT DO THEY OFFER IN RETUNR ? “. “WHAT IS THEIR ALTERNATIVE ? ”
At least prof Mesfin and his colleagues are boldly and courageously puting forward a possible solution. If Wish those people can tell us something that can give us at least little hope instead of accusing or being “angry” with those who are struglling back home.

What Elias and his ilks offer us is nothing less than ‘A Message from Eritrean Brothers and Sisters’; that is a faux slide show that is compiled by Elias (pictures courtesy of flickr photos) with no Eritreans on it except the Eritrean flag. Essentially, what ER is saying is, here is a benevolent kind and rich neighbor who is willing to lend you anything you need including machine guns and tanks to gain your freedom.

I am happy to see majority of us, Ethiopians, are agreeing in one thing, in isolating the ones who have done, if not more as bad, damage to the Ethiopian straggle. Elias’s interview was the first time ever that exposed him. Elias is one of the most distractive Ethiopians. As they say “little knowledge is dangers”, I do not think Elias is a bad person by natural, but his lack of depth knowledge in most topics he clams to know about, has gotten him in hot sit. My advice to you, EMF, is do not be another ETHIOPIAN REVIEW. If you are already half way there you need to swim back out. Elias might is a lost case, not worth trying to save.
Difference of opinion is a healthy thing to have.

Hi dear all,
I wonder why people are targeting individuals for attack when they have to concentrate on the option they claim to have and try their best to rally the public around them. If they have any alternative to put forward, which helps as a guiding principle and if they work hard toward its realization then it is acceptable and plausible. If they sit at macdonald, eating garbage and defame people, they are really nonsense and garbage. I don’t think it matters whoever says what; what matters is a bold person has to come forward with alternative idea and declare his path to the public and then we can decide who to follow. If it is still talk of a crap, it is utterly nonsense, people would like to listen what bold people have to say. The world doesn’t belong to the big mouthes but to the practical minds and we don’t want to listen to your craps. Come forward if you have good things to offer, otherwise shut your moouth and eat your damn hot dogs or junk.

I think Proffesor is trying to act like “kirstos samera”, a mediator between GOD and the Devil. He should learn from the first mistake they learned in Kaliti. We better advice him to be couregeous and tell the truth that Meles and his gangs are “the Bandist group” riding the Devil, with an End being consumed by the Devil(Agazi). He should never forget also that Meles in his own words declared himself as a leader of “Interrahamwe = Agazi” during the 2005 election. and realistic.His main concern is the people,ethiopian people,not just

Peaceful strugle is the struggle of the braves with one only logical end - making the public own the struggle and the victory. Peaceful struggle is a struggle that needs the leadership of ABA-MELAS from within the people. On the contrary the other form of struggle, the author of the report on the site seems to sympathiz, is the struggle of ABA-DULAS (group of ABA-DULAS) owned by them including the victory - if there would be one without costing us our country. Ethiopians have been known and identified the TPLF as their most dangerous enemy of their country. We do not need any professor or political figure to tell us about the TPLF and its mission in Ethiopia. Professor Mesfin and Co. should be told in clear terms that they are contributing to the survival of the TPLF and thereby the death or disappearance of Ethiopia by appeasing the enemy. The professor
seems to use these kinds of unwarranted statements to gain some favour from the TPLF to legalise his party. Opportunism or senility could be the reason for the professor`s position. His party Andenet is no different from the other loyal opposition groups obeying and serving Meles Zenawi, and is devoid of the energy and resolve to mobilize and fight the TPLF.

Hi Everybody,
This my first time when I am blogging. I have heard the Professor speech three times before writing. I have a deep respect for Professor Mesfin & his colleagues. Their bravery and willingness to fight with dictator at home is admirable. I have to be honest that I didnt expect such a speech from the person I respect most and I still do. His speech lacked a little bit of wisdom I should dare say.
One thing he shouldnt have done is talking and mocking about other persons opinions. The meeting is held in the name of Andinet and his speech should have mainly focused abt his party views and opinions. This is where I think he lacked a little bit of tolerance and as EMF said “pluralism”.
But I admire his boldness and openess but I stongly believe that he should be careful abt talking other peoples strategy or opinions.
The other thing I noticed is that he doesnt have a clear knowledge of what Ginbot 7 is abt. In fact I was surprised to find that he has the same opinion as an ordinary person. In politics, some times things have to be understood and not be told explicitly. I hope u know what I mean.
I hope he will not offend us in his successive speech in USA.

Prof Mesfin has time and again demonstrated his lack of good judgement and integrity. He CAN NOT and SHOULD NOT be considered a reliable leader in the struggle against woyane. He is a malacious and vindictive old man not unlike Hailu Shawel or Meles Zenawi. I have cited below instances of where he manifested the above traits going as far back as 1991, when Woyane took power. BIJIGA ENSERMU above has gone as far back as the Imperial times.
- the professor’s comments during the debate/interview with Endrias Eshete and Meles Zenawi Ca. 1992
- His failure to criticize Hailu Shawel when he was acting as a baby feudal late last year. Instead he showed no qualms about attacking Birhanu Nega in spite of and, I suspect, because of Birhanu’s widespread, and I must add, well founded popularity
- He recklessely and malaciously tried to belittle Birhanu’s Book characterizing it as Birhanu’s story about himself. Despite sincere public requests including during his interview on ETN, he was unable and unwilling to provide reasons for his claim, neither was he able or interested in pointing out examples as to where in the book Birhanu unduly distorted the real story of the election in his own favour.
In general, people like professor Mesfin should not be allowed to adversely influence the struggle because of peoples ill placed respect for the ኦልድ ማን.

I have a deep respect for the good Professor, I think we all him a great deal for his life time contribution, especially for creating a good institution like EHCRO, but I might have a reservation on what is doing recently. I have heard all of his speech including that what he gave to VOA while being in India. I might be wrong but he is trying to undermine the leaders of G7 sometime openly as he did in his interview where he put on Hailu Shawel and Berhanu equally and now between lines in his last speech, I guess it won’t be hard to guess who he is after on most of his message, for example when he talks about the Marshalls and foot soldiers. If what he is trying to do is to distance from those who aspire to use any means to topple the most evil regime in the history of our country, I would accept this as good tactic in his part. But I am afraid his messages are persistently becoming only about that, where is his message about the aspiration UDJ which he came to promote to USA? The only time he spoke about it is when talked about the negative tendencies of some the people in the party. A person of such stature should give a benefit of doubt to those he aspires to do it differently, instead of nipping in the bud, thus doing more damage for the struggle in long run.
He dedicated a lot of time on his speech on attacking those who chose a different strategy, but he should focus his energy and skill first on finding a way to get around the blockage EPRDF has put for UDJ party. I guess it would be virtually impossible to get anything meaningful done without having a legal ground – the registration of the party. Let me be here a prophet and I will be happy to be proven wrong. There is no chance EPRDF will give UDJ party a green light, unless there is a condition
( the combination of disincentives or incentives ) in place which will force it to do so. Currently I do not see any of that on the ground. If anything, it seems EPRDF is more embolden to do whatever it wishes to do, and the only power (the donors), he wanted to be accountable to, has given its illicit blessing to all activities it is doing take out the little oxygen which existed out of the political space. So If I were him, I would leave alone G7and the like of it to carry on and grow. May be that would create the pressure point which will compel the EPRDF to compromise and open up the political space for party like UDJ all others so called “loyal” opposition.

As the saying goes” in the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king”. In this case Elias is the proverbial cyclop! What started as Elias’ lies and misrepresentation of what was said at the gathering is now spilling over to EMF. Readers should have known Elias and his sophomoric analysis by now. If Elias is in fact the objective journalist that he is pretending to be why didn’t he show up at the meeting and challenge professor Mesfin instead of hiding behind his key board and spreading lies and innuendos? Do you really listend the whole speech of the Respected proffessor?..i don’t think so…..you just pick some portion of the Evil-spritted ER article & post on your site…..that is why you made such kind of mistake.i never find a single word to insult the proffessor with in his speech you post.so you better soon appologize..otherwise you can go to hell as ER

who do you think you guys are to make such a blunt conclusion. many ethiopians support Prof mesfin. Just because his view doesn’t fit with you, doesn’t mean he angerd ethiopian people. you angered many of us because of your poor thinking that everyone has to think in the same direction. that is too old thinking.
I don’t come to this site often now adays, as I used to, just because it is loosing credibility. you better improve. hope you are not taking ER as a model.
