EMF - The export of injera to North America, Europe and Middle East has caused sharp rise on price of teff, according to sources. The prices of teff, a staple food for Ethiopians, and other food stuffs have been rising sharply in recent successive months, putting millions of people in Ethiopia at risk of severe hunger and destitution, the UK-based charity Oxfam has warned.
Close to 40,000 injera is being imported every month from Ethiopia to Washington, DC alone causing the price of a quintal of teff to 1,300 birr at home, while Teff made Injera is excessively manufactured there.
The importers, who are suspected to have a link with the ruling Woyane regime, are selling now 3 injera for $ 5/bag while Ethiopians are eating animal feed as they can’t afford buying it. Concerned Ethiopians are calling a boycott campaign on imported teff injera in North America and Europe.
It is moral imperative to do so.

I support to bocycot any imported food. This is a moral obligation to all of us.While our people are starving back home we cant alow the TPLF business representatives to make profit at the expense of Diabpora Ethiopian
PLEASE BOYCOT IMPORTED INGERA
July 27th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
I cant buy the idea that 40k injera per month caused hunger and famine in Ethiopia. This is nonsense.
We have a lot of things to boycott if we want to change things in Ethiopia.

Please tell us where they are being sold. We also have to know names if possible and city where it is being sold. Yes here in the US we many choices to eat. Lets not be cause of starvation in Ethiopia. Every thing in ethiopia is being exported while our people do not have to eat. For example oil factories are staying idle while selit and nug are being importe. The sad part is same mercahnt who are exporting selit and nuge also import oil. they make maone both ways. the poor or those who barely afford are sucked out.

July 28th, 2008 at 12:04 am
Let us unit, every effort counts, Boycott injera until TPLF is gone!!!!
July 28th, 2008 at 2:07 am
I quit any imported Injera; this is the least I can do to minimize the plight of my people at home; I cannot consider myself human if I consume anything that comes from where my own people starve and live on animal feed.
July 28th, 2008 at 3:14 am
For a country with all the problames we have, we should stop and think
what is moral and not.
We have to learn from rice growing countrys, they stopped exporting to aother country.
Imagen this is thier most export product of thier country.
Due to the shortage of rice at home they stopd.
My people of Ethiopia please see beyond the monitary advantage of quick
money and have the gut twards your fellow brother and sisters.

We Ethiopians are very late or react wrongly against woyane in many cases and situations. Our problem is serious and needs solution for once and forever otherwise, the meles parties and others that supports woyane take a chance to dismantle our country and exploite our resourses.Their mission is very clear, they are dengerous enemies of the country aswellas the people. We Ethiopians are ruled by our enemies. No countries ware ruled by their enemies it might be,Ethiopia is the first country that controlled and suffered by evils. They are evils we have to fight them in any ways.Boycotting is one of the best way to stop woyanes evils activities. If you are Etiopian, boycott now!!!!!!!

July 28th, 2008 at 7:04 am
It is just only about 80 quintals of teff that is being exported. This is a very insignificant amount to cause any increase in the price. So I don’t buy the idea of boycotting imported injera. If we really have to boycott there are many things to do and the real problem of the ever increasing inflation for me is the over duplication of money by the government. In addition, Banks have played their role by lending too much money. As a result there is excess money available in the market which will eventually make people pay much more than the real value of things.
July 28th, 2008 at 7:59 am
I agree with the boycott but the problem is not only the exportation it is also using the land which used to cultivate teff for another non eadible product. Woyane gave the most fertile land of teff (from addis to Debrezeit) for flower growers. That also increased the shortages of teff too. let us boycot buying flowers grown in that area too.

Is baked Enjera (የተጋገረ) imported from Ethiopia or teff grain? There is a difference between this items. Please editor, make clear on this!
Thanks!
July 28th, 2008 at 10:59 am
40,000 injera/month ~ 100 quintal teff/month at most, which translate to 120 tons/years or 0.005% of Ethiopia total annual production of teff!
Evidently his can’t cause a price fluctuation in Ethiopia. The rationale for boycotting the imported injera should be tied to the fact that the business is TPLF related (if that’s the case).
July 28th, 2008 at 11:44 am
It is a very wrong idea.First 40 thousand injera is insignificant to alleviate the existing problem. The export of teff is not the cause of the famine,it is the result of bad governance. We are giving excuse to the woyane that the cause of the problem is export oriented policy.Second ,woyane will get time to resurrect from its despair. It is a good excape goat for the woyane, and will help it to divert the attention of the people. What we should do is to tell the people to stand against the woyane before hunger consumes them.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:53 am
some of you are so so ignorant about what you talking pls think about where you come from our land ETHIOPIA will never die for sure one day the sons and doughters of those patriots will win this battel.friends and those who stand for the truth will be rememberd.
July 28th, 2008 at 11:58 am
I have heard the Woyane is profiting from this, so we have to boycott the Injera to save for our families in Ethiopia. We hae to bocycott all and evety business that wayanne is benefitting from, period!!!
July 28th, 2008 at 11:59 am
How about berbere, shiro, kinche and all food items that have been selling in various Ethiopian markets through out the world since the derg time, are we suppose to boycot all of them? is selling these items abroad causing unavailability and price hike? or do we have some thing against the exporters of injera? Woyane told us the price increase in food items happened in September because a lot of Ethiopians visited the country for the millienium and ate all the food up, and now we are acting as silly as these shameless leaders.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Well said Atre
“rationale for boycotting the imported injera should be tied to the fact that the business is TPLF related (if that’s the case).”
Only Woyanes are allowed such perks as using the Ethiopian Airlines to get US dollars. It is even possible the business may be run by Meles’ wife Azeb Mesfin who is proving to be the biggest unfair “tycoon” in Ethiopia where they say you have to share something with her in order to run business in Ethiopia nowadays!!
Boycott businesses run by tyrants who kill their own citizens to cling to power despite being beaten by 90% at the polls on May 15, 2005!

specially if he/she is residing in the diaspora.Trust me this will be an effective way of distancing people from these criminals, this will be the best way to make woyanes to examine themselves . don’t shy list for us where this imported injera is being sold .this we can do ,it such a simple thing to do
Make woyane ” aar yenekaw enichet”
July 28th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
From the information I have and I also believe this is not only to sale injera for profit. There is also a plan in the long run to Poison the Diaspora who fight the meles regime and never kneel down. as most of us know meles and his gangs got here to the position they have now by killing their own friends if you read their past history. Weak up people and watch out meles and co are disparate to take any action to silence us. To me not only boycotting in addition, I don’t eat this injera came from Ethiopia. In the futture we may repot to the FDA for inspection @ to save our life. This more politics than economics.
July 28th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
It is regrettable to say it but let us face it we Ethipians know no other form of struggle except “Boycott” This is something that has been going on way back from the time of university student movement in the sixties on and on and on … It is endemic and has pentrated our blood system. come on Guys suggest another constructive idea of supporting the real people who are actually in need of help I mean those who are starving . This is not something political or religious matter. It’s just moral obligation for all enjera lovers. but as for me I believe the Bible as the word of God and 2 Chronicles 7:14 says
” If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
let’s humble ourselves and pray for our country just like what Daniel, Moses and Nehmiah and Easter as well as others men and women of Did for their nation.
Beside praying we should help the poor by providing them their daily necessities. As far as I know Ethiopian farmers are the only ones growing teff . Those of us who are living overseas we don’t need to spent 5 dollars for 3 enjera while 5 dollars is a weekly salary for some people back home or less. It might seem cheap to you but for us to get this enjera caused our fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers to sleep hungry back home while we enjoy teff enjera here overseas.
God Bless Ethiopia and as for me and my family we won’t buy teff enjera!

The internal enemies of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi and his followers are enriching themselves at the expense of Ethiopia. There are clear evidences which show that injera and other food itmes are being sold abraod by the TPLF and their thugs (the enemies of Ethiopia). So any country loving Ethiopian is urged to boycott TPLF and their affliated businesses both in Ethiopia and abroad.
July 29th, 2008 at 8:01 am
I don’t really think boycotting to buy injera will help alleviate the problem down there for good. the ethiopian farmers should ’stop’ growing teff and start growing other cereals like wheat, barely, maize etc. From the productivity point of view, from 1 hactar of land you get max 8 quintal of teff but up to 50 quintal of wheat or up to 60 quintal of maize… It is almost impossible to increase the productivity of teff because of the inherent lodging (me gasheb) problem of teff plant, i mean for example if u add fertilizer, then the plant fall down to the ground and spoiled because it has very weak stem.
sorry guys but our eating culture is one of the main reason for our recurrent starvation!!
If you wanna help our country please dont invest on teff, think some other cereals…
God bless ethiopia
July 29th, 2008 at 9:53 am
FGT:
You have your number wrong. According to FAO, here are the average yields for some grains in Ethiopia:
Maize = 22.5 q/Ha
Wheat = 18 q/Ha
Sorghum = 16 q/Ha
Barley = 14 q/Ha
Teff = 9 q/Ha (1997)
In order to alleviate Ethiopia recurrent food shortage, I don’t understand why we should stop growing teff. Can’t we grow teff AND other high yield crops? Although teff has a comparatively low yield, it is becoming a real cash crop, hence more attractive to the farmer. A simple calculation show that growing an hectare of maize fetch about 6700 birr, whereas an hectare of teff is worth 10800 birr!
Plus teff is known as one of the 4 super-grains in the world and should remain the flagship of Ethiopia agriculture.
If we want to be outraged, let’s channel our outrage in the right direction. For example how about the regime decision to grant fertile lands to flower growers? That’s a shame!

Ethiopia bans grain exports as domestic prices surgeADDIS ABABA, Jan 30, 2006 (AFP) - Ethiopia on Monday indefinitely banned the export of all grain products in a bid to stem huge price hikes blamed on political instability, smuggling and the rising cost of transportation and fertilizer.
“The export of indigenous grains, including the staple grains, like teff, maize, sorghum and wheat will be suspended indefinitely,” the Ministry of Trade and Industry said.
July 29th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
If truly the cause for starvation is the export, I would support it 100%. Exporting 40,000 injera to me, sounds petty. Our problem is much deeper. The people with money are going after money in every aspect and therefore have no consideration of their fellow citizens and what impact everything they’re doing has on our country. We need to change our outlook on life, and there needs to be a major reform on how the whole country’s thinking is progressing in general. I’m the first to admit, I don’t do much for my country, because I have a hectic life here, but we all need to start contributing one way or another.

The problem is simple. If the demand for a product is high, produce more of it.
Why can you produce more? Because we work like it is 1008 instead of 2008. Farmer and government, that is.
Boycott is not the solution. Freeing the land from the state ownership is. The rest will work itself out.

What is our common goal?
To support the poor people of Ethiopia and give them better lives.
How can we do that?
By creating jobs and practicing fair trade. If you can not go to Ethiopia and start business there, the least you can do is buy the product of Ethiopia from wherever you are.
What to do with import of injera?
Of course, buy, it, enjoy!!!!!
July 30th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Focus on the poor peoples’ interest. When you buy injera imported into the US, you are 1. helping the farmer 2. Helping the Gagari 3. Support Ethiopian Airlines Economy 4. Encouraging Foreign currency flow in the country. The amount of injera that is exported is only a tiney fraction of the total production and doesn’t contribute to the famine or the raise of the price of teff.
July 30th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
The amount of injera being exported is only a fraction of the total production. Think about the support you are giving by buying Ethiopian products including injera: farmer, Gagari, Ethiopian Airlines business, foreign currency for the country it goes on. Instead of boycotting on Ethiopian product, team up and insure fair trade is practiced so everyone is compensated appropriately.
July 30th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
What a suicidal society! The last thing you want to do is hurt this poor country’s economy. Instead of boycotting on Ethiopian products, focus on teaming up so fair trade is practiced.
July 30th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
After all, teff is consumed by the riches only, and they can still afford to buy. The poor will not get injera or the price will not be affected just because you stopped buying. Over 100,000 / week is being exported to the neigbouring Arab countries.
July 30th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Don’t feel bad about buying injera. It is the right thing to do! Remember you are supporting your people. What happens if you stop buying? May be that Gagari will lose her job. Nothing more.
July 30th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Since when do the poor eat teff? Hello!
July 30th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
For all who are concerned: Could you tell me how the boycotting contribute in changing the image of Ethiopia?
1. Boycott on product of Ethiopia
2. Result: Failed economy, failed country
3. what next?
July 30th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
I wonder how those injera importers are making money. It must be a very tough business ‘cos the stuff goes bad in a matter of a day. God bless their hearts! This is a great concept and a win win business to all involved. Indeed they have my support! My family and I have been enjoying 100% teff injera.
July 30th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Look at it this way. Injera goes north while dollar heads south.
Now, while injera ends up in your stomac, dollar post up a new machine that churn in injera at a faster rate.
More injera to DC not only responds to more demand in Addis but it also bring in something that does more injera.
So now you see the cycle perpetrate itself and in the process enlarge the pie. So the key is let the people work.
July 31st, 2008 at 1:07 am
Don’t boycott!
Ethiopia and all poor nations were seeking hard to get in to the rich countries market. Now, Injere/Teff successfully start to penetreat and we are asked to stop it?
Instead why don’t work on improving ways to produce more.
That is the natural flow of all successful markets.
Fix the supply, don’t kill the demand.
If production of Teff is hindered by dogmatic Marxist policy of land ownership that potentially blocks improved farms that may jump into this attractive market, deal with it.
We can’t get out of poverty by boycotting.

Let’s say somthing about the so called Weyanes(the group of werrobela)
What is the secret coming in power those durryes(werrobelas),what is your expectation from these mannearless and irresponsible group. It is clear that they are realy enemies and they are committed to do all bad and evil things against Ethiopia and Ethiopians. But we,those living abroad
have a great chance to challenge and fight weyanes in many ways. Some of them are, don’t lie and don’t hear untruth stories or informations that have poor evidence,be practical, edgucate yourself in any ways, dont give any chance for the enemy of ethiopia including woyanes supporters. But now what we are going to do is,” BOYCOTT” injera and others coming from our poor land.No matter the quantities,i know it is insignificant comparing the problem and the needs that morethan 15 million people is starved. But the important thing is the idea and challengs that we reacting is great.

Guys, let’s not politicize it. Let’s talk about the fact. It is not only injera. How about berbere friends. Whoever is exporting these foods from Ethiopia and whoever is importing in the West I really do not care. The most important thing is let’s do something to stop this from happening. We live in a global economy where the world is becoming like one and doing what we are trying to do might be difficult legally. But let’s talk from the moral and ethical stand point. Let’s think for the millions and millions of people suffering from the rising food prices back home. Trust me if we reduce our habit of eating injera and berbere abroad it will definitely have an impact on the price of teff and berbere back home. I am for the boycot and I will sign it when available.
July 31st, 2008 at 5:01 pm
I am glad that I am now informed. Definitely from now on I will never buy any of the imported teff ingera or anything for that matter. It is a moral obligation and the right thing to do.
I am still on boycotting flying on Ethiopian Airlines. I do not want to be responsible and part of Woyane regime for my peoples death and sufferings. My little $1800 will go far in saving so many peoples lives.
July 31st, 2008 at 9:38 pm
This is for your YESHIEMEBET!
Find out what the truth is. Don’t be a fool and pass on an apportunity to: 1. Enjoy healthy eating 2. Support the poor gagari and farmers of Ethiopia 3.Support “The grace of Ethiopia” — Ethiopian Airlines! 4. Increase Foreign Currency to Ethiopia. The poor people of Ethiopia never afford to eat injera, never! Yes, there are people starving in our country, but the teff is not what they need.
July 31st, 2008 at 9:44 pm
You bunch of naive boycotters: The way out of poverty is TRADE not AID! Contribute to trade if you want to change your country’s economy! Governements come and go but your country will be there. Don’t be blinded by politics - focus on the economy! Those poor people of Ethiopia need you and you have the power to make a difference.
July 31st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
I say, find basic facts before you decide to boycott or not to boycott. That is a wise thing to do. Don’t be biased, be open and do what is right.
July 31st, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Hi there! Do you have any idea the country needs foreign currency to buy medicine for the poor people of Ethiopia? This is basic international trade. You give what you have in exchange for what you need. What we need to do is to find a way to increase production of teff, apply fairtrade and encourage trade.
July 31st, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Boycotting is not the solution it is another problem! Think.
July 31st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
I think this whole deal is a win win situation! Our money is going where it should go - finally! Being invested in our country while we enjoy our own country’s product here in America! Are you crazy to think about boycotting on IMPORTED PRODUCT FROM ETHIOPIA? And buy whose product?! Sure there are people getting hungry. At least we reach them by improving our country’s economy. I am not a politician but I am all for supporting Ethiopian economy. Indeed, that’s the only way out of poverty.

I didn’t know what it was,but I have seen this XL injera at
this “Ethiopian” store. I think it is Arada Market in Takom park, MC. The guy behind the counter was speaking tigrena, so his cusins are supplying him with injera… !
August 1st, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Interesting to note that alread 80 reactions on a suggestion to boycot INJERA, … about TRADE. On other real national issues it is silence
August 1st, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Folks we are farm level economy, we can only trade what we produce. If we don’t trade in injera then what? trade in technology ?
August 1st, 2008 at 6:09 pm
For me, it is hard to belive this idea. 4ok injera doen’t make any diference. The main purpose of this boycott is, to stop those people who bring injera to US and Europe. Reason for that is, they are related to the ruling part. Shame on you people, this is not the way to narrow our differences and work for our people who are really in need of food and other basic necessities. Please, forget political difference it is not the right time now. Out people are looking for us to help them on food shortage and other problems. Let is work on that.
thank you.

Basic Math — 2nd grade math.
Do you know over 2 million injeras are baked / day in Addis only - let alone all the rest of Ethiopia? What is exported is less than a 10,000 injera a day. How does it affect the price increase on teff or those who are starving? Let’s see, that is .005% of Addis Ababa’s injera, or .0005% of the whole contry’s injera.
DON”T WASTE YOUR TIME BOYCOTTING - THINK OF SOMETHING THAT IS MORE EFFECTIVE.
August 4th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
As long as the poor benfits, that’s all I care about. The poor do not know much about the economy, much less about politica. All they care about is their daily living. How can we provide that to the very poor without talking too much? Why not put the effor and energy geared towards boycotting to raising money through somekind of program and reach the poor?
August 4th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Some one asked Mother Theresa to join a war rally. She said let me know when you have a peace rally and I will join. I am here to tell you my fellow Ethiopians to let me know when you join hands for good purpose. Forget about fighting the government. Let’s fight our real enemy, which is poverty thorugh TRADE not AID!
Thank you.

We arleady decide in diffierient parted of the world .even not to by the other products from ethiopia.even not to send money .it is good resolution we did .no injera!!!
August 5th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Mother Teresa said: I will never attend an anti-war rally; if you have a peace rally, invite me. I am learning that if you focus on what you want, (peace), in this case wealth, instead of what you don’t want, (war), in this case poverty, you will receive it in abundance! Let’s focus, pray, rally, preach Peace, and most importantly good wish for our country - we will have it! Don’t focus on what we don’t want, focus on what we want.
Don’t boycott!!
