More than 3,000 people have fled the southern city, where an estimated 10 people died on the third day of some of the most intense fighting for months.
A BBC reporter says Islamists have been trying to seize control of the port from a local clan.
There has also been fierce fighting in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, and pirate hijackings off the north coast.
The BBC’s Mohamed Olad Hassan says Kismayo, Somalia’s third city, is strategically important because it serves as a port for the south of the country and for neighbouring Kenya.
The head of a human rights group in the port said the fighting had caused an acute humanitarian crisis.
Many people have no access to food and all business activity is reported to have stopped.
Market hit
In Mogadishu on Thursday, some mortars landed near the compound of President Abdullahi Yusuf, who was out of the country.

Another landed near a mosque in the busy Bakara market, killing at least six people, a witness told the BBC.
Witnesses said government troops and their Ethiopian allies responded by opening fire, killing several civilians.
At least 20 people were reported to have been killed in fighting in the capital.
Ethiopian troops entered Somalia in December 2006, to oust Islamist forces from Mogadishu.
The police chief in the capital said people who wanted to sabotage talks in neighbouring Djibouti between Somalia’s provisional government and its Islamist rivals were behind the most recent violence, our correspondent reports.
Somalia has been without a functioning national government since 1991 and has suffered ongoing civil strife.
The UN’s World Food Programme is expanding its programme to feed 2.4 million people in Somalia by the end of the year.
Piracy
Meanwhile, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said on Friday that pirates had seized a German cargo ship off the Somali coast a day earlier.
Earlier, a Japanese tanker and an Iranian bulk carrier had been hijacked in the Gulf of Aden, a busy international shipping route to the north of Somalia.
An IMB spokesman said a warship from an international force was tracking the hijacked ships.
Another ship, a Malaysian oil tanker with 39 crew was captured in the same area on Tuesday.

Some times we might not understand the real different between our potential enemies and the current ones.
Who said that the Islamists are pro Ethiopians?NOT PRO WOYANE.

It is difficult to appreciate what Ethiopian soldiers are doing in Somalia. It would have been good idea to defend our borders from any potential attack by the time from that side. Crossing the boarder was a historic error, that type of operation has never been in Ethiopian history. Within Ethiopian boarders, no enemy can challenge Ethiopia. No enemy. And God has never left us alone. Ethiopia is a country whose enemy “fetno yemigezalat”. History–both recent and remote–just tells us that.
Our soldiers are paying the price for something they do no know and the war leaves a permanent scar on the relationship between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Actaully these to tribes have been leading the country for centuries turn by turn. Still Gambella and JzB nicknames seem to have that mentality of giving turn for power to the other tribe. That trend has to stop and democracy has to prevail. We are in a civilised world today. So every Ethiopian has the right to struggle for democracy and the right to lead the country if ELECTED. Do not consider every one who opposes EPRDF as Amhara or every one who supports EPRDF as Tigre. Do you think also OLF, ONLF, OFDM, and Oromo Congress Party are all Amharas? Do not believe them if your bosses told you like that. Are Tigre and Amhara the only tribes who should struggle in the politics of Ethiopia and who should hold leadership? Let’s think out of the box, and struggle for democracy in a real sense. If EPRDF is democratic both you and I have equal right and responsibility to support it. The same logic goes to all other parties.
Do not try to escape the reality by engaging in banal rhethoric. I do not care whoever leads Ethiopia, but he has to bring democracy, social equity and economic development. The current government STILL has the chance in its hands to bring about these changes. I regret to tell you that it didn’ts do so satisfactorily so far. Do you frankly think it did? If so, convice us, otherwise advise your leaders to consider a change of some of their poliies, then I will be their follower too; but that is not because I belong to their tribe.
To whichever party you belong, avoid emotions and argue in substance, then you can convice at least a few people because there could be something good in EPRDF’s policies too (though they finally become dysfunctional because implementation is marred by ethnicity).

The issue at hand is our soldiers being in somalia. This is just one issue in Ethiopian politics. As there could be non-EPRDF Ethiopians who support or oppose this issue, I do not expect all EPRDF memebers to support everything the party does. So, every one (opposition or EPRDF) should not make “blanket” conclusions by taking just one point. Chifin digaf is as bad as chifin tekawmo; I do not see much difference between the two. That is unscientific and anyone will never acheive objectives that way. Reason and objectivity should prevail in our society.
This generation of Ethiopia seems to be lacking the capacity to sustain Ethiopia as a country; something has to be done by all parties concerned(including the ruling party). This is a saddening episode of Ethiopian history (since 1974).
