I have deep respect for you guys at Ethiomedia. My distest to the Tplf-ALTERD flag as strong as everybody else. But this kind of article is going to diminish your role, please remove it. Leave this kind of things to Elias.

I did not read any comment of the web site on the flag (maybe becase of my PC’s problem), but I have read in other websites. My comments do not relate to this website, but, generally, I believe its good not to polilicise evey thing. I think she was not trying to pass any message with that. Of course that flag contains a lion which symbolizes the solomonic dynasty (from Aksume to Haile Silassie). That dynasty is not there any more as far as I know, so the plain Green, Yellow, Red flag should represent Ethiopia. I believe, a flag should not contain emblems that symbolize a particular group of leaders. But it is alright if some people like the flag with a lion sign due to their respect for the kings under the solomonic dynasty, as far as they did not clim to make it official flag. In Meseret’s case we do not know how and why she held it. So I feel it is better not to comment or politicise without enough information.

This [picture of MEseret Defar is NOT from Beijing Olympics. Look at her short and jersey and compare it with the one she wore in Beijing. Besides our flag is a pure green, yellow and red. We don’t need the monarchical lion or derg’s hammer and sickle or woyane’s ugly star. Moreover please don’t try to politicize sports. These athlets work hard for their country and their people. So please leave them alone.

Why do you say something that Defar might not have intentionally done? It seems that you want the Ethiopian Government to harrass and possibly imprision her. What is the need to compare with Teddy Afro? Someone gave her Ethiopian flag, and she took it. What do you want her to do? She has to investigate, consult the government officials whether to carry it or not, and with thier permision carry it? This really diminished your role as journalists-It doesnot seem you are doing the right job.

Why arguing about the Moambessa flag Meseret carried.
It didn’t happen during Beijing Olympic. It’s from one of her athletics races in the US. Look at her running jersey; it’s different from the one she or our athletes wore at the games. All athletes can wear only jerseys bearing their countries official flag. Further more this photo depict her doing the honor walk/tour after the medal ceremony. In fact Meseret wore the official jogging suit during the medal ceremony as is the usual norm and she didn’t do honor walk after that.

I see a lot of Ethiopian haters complaining about the real Ethiopian flag. It seems the Ethiopia they want to create is a mercenary Woyane imagination of doing it dirty job for who ever hired them. The history of Ethiopia that lasted longer than those who hire Woyane to destroy it is not going to go away just because Woyane wished it away.
While the Woyane Bandas, as we speak are running their mouth to undermine Ethiopia any way they can, they are hiding their crime disguised as Ethiopian. Where and when a Banda sell out decide what is good for Ethiopia. 100 year history Woyane pushed to undermine Ethiopian history is the same dirt that is pushing to undermine the flag.
Woyane who can not protect the integrity of Ethiopia can not decide what symbol, emblem, color Ethiopian flag should have. The cadres should be told over and over again they are noting but an enablers of the ugliness of Woyane

Leave the athlet alone, we should not creat trouble on her. But, let’s talk about facts regarding our three forms of flag.
The lion of Juda flag has a cross on it. The lion is alo on the BIRR, it does not matter. So, I am afraid, that flag does not represent the country in which the state ‘claims’ to be secular. That is because the non-Christian Ethiopians have also to accept it. But the EPRDF flag is more Christianized that ever before. It contains the star of David (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_of_David). King David is the grand father of Menelik I of the son of Queen of Sheba. And that story has a special place in Ethiopian history. Orthodox believes would be happy about this star flag as King David is the most liked by God. For those who associate themselves with the Solomonic dynasty (with high religious sentiment) it is a good strategy to use a flag with the star because the lion and cross are obvious and could easily encite resistance. That is presumably why it is used now. So far, I did not understand the meaning of the rays coming out of the star of David. Any one help me out in this regard.
I think ppl who are ok with the lion flag with cross will be happier with the flag with the star of David as David has a special place in Christianity and the history of the Solomonic Dynasty.
For me, we do not need any identifier on our flag as any one Ethiopian should accept it as his/her own. So let’s forget the flag with the lion of Juda and the Star of David, let use our Green-Yellow-Red flag. Lets also discuss in a calm way about our Country, whichever patry we support. Let’s make Ethiopia our first priority and work for a political system where there is democracy and social equity. Any one (I mean members of EPRDF and of the opposition parties) should act as an agent of positive change. Beseletene zemen ers berasachin anibelala, sile Egziabher bilachihu, avoid the poison of ethnic parochialism from within yourself. If you put the poison inside you, it will eat you first and perhaps it harms your enemy next, perhaps not.
We are living the the Westt for decades but we did not learn the plenty of good things from them.

I admire her courage for not waving the woyane flag. However, she is giving us the other side of the coin. This is not a flag that represents all ethiopians, either. This Moe Anbessa flag is a symbol of amhara repression for millions of us. What happened to the plain tri-color Ethiopian flag without glorifying Amhara’s fairy tale of Kibre Negest or the fake woyane flag. I won’t have any respect for any kind of insignia on that flag if it is to represent all Ethiopians. While the woyane assault on that nation is something we are all agonizing with, trying to replace it with Amhara domination is a mistake. A fatal mistake, I warn you.

I think people got happy just because no one wanted to see the current Ethiopian flag. It is not becuase people were interested to bring the the amhara and tigre kings (that is Menelik I of Aksume to Hailesilassie I of Addis Ababa) back. Let’s examine history and balance between reality and propaganda. Who fought hard to overthrow these kings? Weren’t the amharas among the people who visibly struggled to change the system into a republic back in the 1950s, 60s and 70s? Those who lived in the three governments could correct me.
We should not get into the trap of propagandists too easily. For one thing the kings were both Tigre and Amhara in the main and any propoaganda against the dynasty equally applies to both ethnic groups. In addition, except the kings and a few of their relatives, ALL other Ethiopias were tenants (in every ethnic group). There were a few balabats and many chisegnas in all over Ethiopia. And there were balabat and chisenga in all ethnic groups. That is balabat is not reserved to the kings’ tribes. And each ethnic group had a king that reported to the king of kings at the center. That is just history, that was how all countries in the world reached here, but that was not something good part of our history. That system budied by “mediet larashu in aboit 1974″. That was one golrious history of ours. But in the propoaganda today it sounds as if this history was done after 1991.
Currently, I do not see any one who struggles to bring the balabat system back. But let’s prevent our system from getting into modern form of balanat system. THUS LET’S THINK IN UNISON TO TRANSFORM OUR COUNTRY. In the past we had both glorious and depressing parts of our history
Let’s see both the glorious and the depressing part of our history, evaluate it, learn from it and then repeat the glorious ones and prevent the depressing ones from coming. These glorious and depressing histories were there in the past and still there. Our emotions should leave space for reason and calm, scientific arguments. Do not associate the leaders of any time with the ethnic groups which the latter claim to belong. Maybe they do not belong? At least every amhara or tigre did not have the right to be a king unless he/she traces his genealogy to King Solomon. So the king’s family is clearly distinct from the people. May be the same (or clearer) disticntion applies to the current leaders and the tribe they claim to have come from.
It doesn’t help to use ‘woyane’ and ‘neftenga’ terms as derogatives too. The former has a positive meaning to people who fought derge (and I credit them for that) and the latter has a very positive meaning in country side Ethiopia.
I know blood and brain both start with a letter “B”, but I do not confuse the two. When I want to think–I use the latter.
Finally, Greew-Yelow-Red is Ethiopiann flag for me. Ready to get convinced if there is a better choice!

I wonder some of the Ethiopian decedents participating this game under the flag of other nations. I just roughly come across the following common Ethiopian names; there could also be some other participants whom I couldn’t find through their typical Ethiopian name & no detail information available. Here are their names.
1. Abey Legesse Elvan (F) for Turkey
2. Alemitu Bekele (F) for Turkey
3. Tezeta Dengersa (F) for Turkey
4. Seble Bekele Özyurt (F) for Turkey
5. Maryam Yusuf Jemal (F) for Bahrain Originally Zenebech Tola
6. Alemayehu Bezabeh (M) for Spain
7. Bizuneh Fasil (M) for USA
8. Assayehen Habtamu (M) for Israel
9. Ayele Seteng (M) for Israel

If these athletes participate under one flag, there would be more chance for Ethiopians to get better results. Why Turkey took these athletes, I really don’t know? Because of Abye legesse, Turkey earns two silver medals in this game, which belongs to Ethiopia, in fact.
Any way we are very happy about Tirunesh Dibaba having double gold medals in Olympic history. She repeats the name of Miruts Yifter of 1980 in Moscow as a female athlete in Beijing 2009. Today we expect also definitely from Kenenisa Bekele. It is definitely known that his victory is.
I congratulate all Ethiopian in general for this victory.

Either this/the flag defar holds or GREEN GOLD RED without any signson it is my Ethiopian flag which I am so proud of it. The flags which the woyanes use do not represent me at all. I just deteste it when I just look at it. It is a flag of a party called the fake EPRDF/the thugs.

Shame on woyanes! They confisicated the land of Ethiopian farmers and now our people are starving to death because they can’t manage the land to their own needs. Obviously, woyane holds onto the land to make sure the peasants won’t support opposition parties. However, that action by these thugs is turning into deaths of millions. This is a systematic genocide. When one third of 80 million are on the verge of death, it is only fair to denounce everything this group stand for. Woyanes, stop the genocide of the Ethiopian people by freeing up the land they rightfully own.

The Ethiopian flag was originally conceived as a tri color green-yellow-red. Nothing more, nothing less. All other additions on the flag represent the interest of one group. The current crap on the flag represents Tigre repression and the lion implies Amhara supremacy.

I like being ‘Amhara’. Cause, we are proud Ethiopians that can be found in every dirty place in Ethiopia. Such as, ower whole family begging in the streets of Addis and also in every church found in the entire country. Also, our beautiful ladies are doing the finest job in the bars, streets of Addis and the Arab countries.
There is no single tribe/nationality except the Amhara which is backward, barbaric and uncivilized!
