Addis Ababa, 21 April 2008 (EMF) – Thousands of Ethiopians gathered on Monday at the kangaroo court in Addis Ababa, to protest against the vindictive imprisonment of the popular artist, Teddy Afro. The kangaroo court adjourned today the case of Teddy Afro to Wednesday, 23 April 2008, sources said. The infamous Judge, Leul G/Mariam adjourned the case to deleberately delay justice to the artist.
Leul G/Mariam, the Judge who gave death sentences and life imprisonment to almost all political prisoners, including journalists and kinijt leaders, inquired the prosecutor to come up with his case in ten days. But the prosecutor responded him saying three days are enough. “This is very unusual but not unexpected,” said a senior lawyer in Addis Ababa. “It is a politically motivated vengeance against the artist.” she added. According to the lawyer, the inquiry usually comes from a prosecutor, not from a judge.
Teddy was framed by the TPLF authorities in November 2006, allegedly for the hit-and-run crime, a fabricated story which Teddy vehemently rejects.
It is obvious that Teddy Afro is behind bars over his music which is critical to the incumbent dictator.

This short article about Teddy Afro and his role in the current Ethiopia situation was written about a year ago. I thought, considering the fact that currently he is imprisoned in Kality; we should revisit the Teddy Afro Factors. And, we all should think of him and follow his extraordinary and exemplary life.
It is an open secrete that the Teddy Afro’s music has been phenomenal in the contemporary Ethiopia music history. Teddy’s music not only tells the amazing talent that this young man acquires, they also convey the issues that Teddy cares so much about. Apparently what Teddy cares about is what most Ethiopians care about. That is the main reason why his messages are residing in the majority Ethiopians heart and makes his message powerful. Since the release of “Yasteserial” I had chances to attend three of Teddy’s concerts. In March 2006 in Seattle, in July 2006 in Lose Angeles and again on July 2, 2007 in Seattle, Washington. In these concerts I noticed that Teddy flexed his Ethiopian celebrity mussel by drawing large crowed of funs from every age group and gender, particularly the younger generation. Besides entertaining his fan base, Teddy also consistently speaks about, from stage, the matters that are dear to him and to all of us Ethiopians. In my opinion Teddy’s messages can be seen in three main categories.
First, Teddy sings and preaches about how we Ethiopians need to strengthen our unity as citizens of a nation by celebrating the culture and beauty of the diverse ethnic groups that existed in Ethiopia. Teddy articulates that our diversity should be a source of pride, strength and beauty for Ethiopia, not a source of division and chaos. That is how most Ethiopians feel and they have been shown that time and time again. Tolerance, acceptance and mutual respect among Ethiopian ethnic groups are all good for all Ethiopians who are capable of thinking rationally.
Teddy sings and talks about the unity of Ethiopia and at the same time he suggests that he is not a politician and he has little or no interest in politics. That leads me to believe that Teddy thinks that the Unity of Ethiopia is not a political issue, it is not suppose to be like that and the Ethiopia unity shouldn’t be up for discussion by any political organization. I couldn’t agree more. Politicians can have their difference regarding a lot of issues with in the unity of Ethiopia that matters for Ethiopians. The Ethiopian politicians can differ on their economic, educational and other polices. However, they have no right to question whether Ethiopia should remain or stay united as a nation or not. The major United States political parties, Democrats and Republican can be mentioned as a good example in this case. These two major political parties have quite a few logical and natural differences between them regarding how to lead and strength the United States of America. However, both of these parties have an unwavering stand when it comes to defending the United States and never put the unity of their county in a compromising position. All Ethiopian political parties should follow the American political parties’ example for the good of our country.
The other interesting message that Teddy has been communicating from the stage is the need of Diaspora Ethiopians to go back to Ethiopia. (Wede Agre Bete) I am sure Teddy is more than smart enough to know the brutal and dictatorial nature of the governing group in Ethiopia. I am sure Teddy knows that thinking freely and expression of ideas can cost life in Ethiopia. I am confident that Teddy understands that the political and economic instability that cause a lot of us to leave our beloved country still exist in Ethiopia. Nevertheless, he emphasizes that we at some point need to go back to Ethiopia, and he says that is where we belong to. It seems to me that Teddy believes we don’t need the Weyanne’s good will or mercy to go back to our country. I think that Teddy believes that we just can be far away from the challenges that we face now in our country history and be effective catalysts for a change. We need to be close to our country, our people and confront whatever obstacle we may have a head of us. In principle, he is defiantly right. If we love our country and if we care so much about it, we need to find a way to go back and contribute what we can for a positive change. It is true that can be a tough task that could go as far as costing our lives for some of us. Given the brutality and irrational thinking of Weyannes What Teddy says and sings on the stage freely has a potential for a trouble for Teddy himself. If I were Teddy, I would not go back to Ethiopia. But, Teddy is not me. He is one courageous and very talented young man who lives what he preaches. That is why I admire him so much. I think he has a rare quality that Ethiopia needs from her children in these very difficult and dark days of our country history.
In conclusion, what we all or at least most of us should learn from Teddy’s factors is that we need to stand for the causes that we believe in. If we don’t speak our mind, if we don’t participate in our country affairs actively, and if we don’t tell hour history, it is easy for others to tell us who we are. Usually they would tell us or paint us as something that they want us to be. That just can’t be good at all. We need to tell who we are, stay active, go back to Ethiopia at least to visit at this point and be a part of the solution that our country needs these days. Visiting or living in our own country, speaking our mind freely and addressing our concerns are just basic human rights that are given to all human beings from the almighty God. We don’t need to wait mercy, permission or a good will from nobody to do that. Imagine what would happen in Ethiopia, if not all of us, if most of us get courage to stand up and be resolute for our convictions. In my opinion that is what Teddy has been doing in a very civil and creative manner, and we all need to do the same thing

Hi my friends, let’s get real. We know Teddy and we love Teddy. But that doesn’t exempt him from punishement for the crime he has committed. Are you guys ok if your brother or sister hit by Teddy Afro and died. Still you will say he is a hero and don’t punish him. I don’t think so!! Teddy killed a person whether poor or rich. The bottom line is he should face justice. Everybody has something to do in his life, whether singing, law, accounting, engineer, doctor, laborer, beggar, etc. But when you kill a person and run away then that is not excusable. Justice be served period!!

No body knows what happened. We all have to leave politics aside for now. If indeed Teddy killed the innocent young man, he needs to get punished. I look at it as if he killed my brother. However, if he is innocent, he should be released as soon as possible. Also, the government should compensate him for his moral.

It is just all a set up by the thugs! Look the accusations were made just around the time Woyane was also concoting evidence against CUD leaders. Just the same old, same old anti-Ethiopian sentiment. Woyane is jealous of Teddy Afro. Teddy is loved by Ethiopians of all, and he has not surrendered to Woyane intimidations or inducements like Aster Awoke and Efrem Tamiru. Neither did Teddy surrender to Alamoudi. His Millenium song was so good that Woyane has to fake as if he was at the Alaoudi built hall, to cheat the world, even if Teddy did his own show free to the public, at the stadium. Woyane is burning inside by this slap on the face by another. It was already angry it lost the election by 90% of the votes. Then comes Teddy like Professor Asrat, never surrender to dirty, gun-throtting thugs! So Woyane has to concote even more bizzare stories. Woyane was a laughing stock then, and it will be now! This dirty regime is making itself hated even more and more by Ethiopians, and there will come a time when these thugs will run out of stories. My dear friend Aschalew: No where in my comments, i said Teddy is not apt to commit a mistake. nor I said he cannot encounter an accident. You know , I know Addis Ababa is not a place where you can hit and run to escape. Teddy, being popular can realize that, if at all he committs the crime. I know him personally and I can tell you that he is not a type of person who would run away from crime scenes.

Well here is the real story!!!!!!!!Its a very simple and stupid plot against one of the individual that the government wants to revenge.The very unorganized TPLF civil personel hit the artist’s car while it was parked on the area I will reveal when the time comes and another group of the government ???????civil spy hit the poor boy on the road that the Artist uses everyday.The reason I said ‘unorganized TPLF civil personel’ because there have been eye witness for the crime they commited on that poor boy but obviously there is no justice system in the country.

I like Teddy Afro`s, he is not smart, but talented vocally. And Teddy made biggest mistake last year in Washington Dc, when he insulted oromos by saying “Uncivilized Gallas”. I wonder if the arrest had do with that ugly comment he made last year.

ከአሥራ አራት አመታት ስደት በኋላ አገሬን ለማየት ግንቦት ሰባት 1997 ዓ.ም አዲስ አበባ ገባሁኝ። የታሪካዊዉን ምርጫ ሁኔት ለመከታተል እድል አግኝቼ ነበር። ዛሬ ስለ ምርጫዉ ማወራት አልፈልግም። ነገር ግን ከፒያሳ ወደ መገናኛ ለመሄድ ሚኒባስ ዉስጥ ገብቼ ያጋጠመኝን ላጫዉታችሁ እፈልጋለሁኝ።
አዉታንቲዉ “መገናኛ ፣ ኮተቤ “ እያለ ተሳፋሪዎችን ይጠራል። ትንሽ እንደቆየን ሚኒባሱ ይሞላና ጉዞ እንጀምራለን። ከጎኔ አንዲት ወጣት ሴት ነበረች። ትንሽ እንደሄድን እንባ በአይኔ መፍሰስ ጀመረ። ከዚህ በፊት ሰምቼ የማላዉቀዉ፣ አይነት በሬጌ ቢት የቀረበና ልብን የሚሰበር ቃላት ያሉት ዜማ ሹፌሩ ያጫዉት ጀመር። “ይሄ ማን ነዉ ?” ብዬ ክጎኔ ያለችዉን ወጣት ጠየኳት። በመገረም አይታኝ “ቴዲ አፍሮ ነዋ “ ብላ መለሰች። ብዙ ጊዜ መንፈሳዊ መዝሙሮችን ስለምሰማ ድሮ ከማዉቃቸዉ ከእንደነ ነነጻነት መለሰ -አረንቻታና ከቴዎድሮስ-ጉዱሮዬ ዉጭ ብዙም የዘመኑ የኪነት ባለሞያዎችን አላዉቃቸዉም ነበር።
“ይቅር በለዉና የበደለን ወቅሰህ
ምህረት አስተምረን አንድ አርገን መልሰህ
ዘጸዓት ለኢትዮጵያ ወደ ተስፋ ጉዞ
ባህር የሚያሻግር አንድ ሙሴ ይዞ
ቅርብ ነዉ አይርቅም የኢትዮጵያ ትንሳዔ
በአንድነት ከገባን የፍቅር ሱባዔ
ፍቅር አጥተን እንጅ በረሃብ የተቀጣን
አፈሩ ገራገር ምድሩ መች አሳጣን
ኦሲሳ ኦሲሳ ኦሲሳ ማንዴላ
ይቅር አባብሎ እንዳስጣለ ሌላ
በተስፋዋ መሬት እንዲፈጸም ቃሉ
ሞፈሩን ያዙና ይቅር ተባባሉ”
እያለ ነበር ቴዲ አፍሮ የሚያቀነቅነዉ። ( በቅርብ ያየሁት ፎቶግራፎቹ (ጸጉሩን በአጭሩ ተቆርጦ ነዉ እንጂ የሚያሳዩት አፍሮ ሰዉ ሆኖ አይደለም። በዚህ ምክንያት ለምን ቴዶ አፍሮ እንዳሉት እስከአሁን ሊገባኝ አልቻለም። እንግዲህ በፊት ጸጉሪን አፍሮ ያደርግ እንደነበረ አላዉቅም) ።
ትዝ ይለኛል በምርጫዉ ዉዝግብ ወቅት የዩኒቨርስቲ ተማሪዎች ይህን በኔ ግምት እንደ ኢትዮጵያ የሕዝብ መዝሙር ሊቆጠር የሚገባዉን ዜማ እያዜሙ ነበር የምርጫዉ መሰረቅ ላይ ያተኮረዉን ተቃዉሟቸዉን የገለጹት።
የዜማዉ መልእክት ግልጽና ቀጥተኛ ነዉ። አገራችን ኢትዮጵያ የተፈጥሮ ሃብት ያደላት፣ ከማንም አገር በምንም የማትተናነስ እንደሆነች፣ እኛ ኢትዮጵያዉያን የደኸየነዉና የቆረቆዝነዉ ፍቅር በማጣታችንና ይቅር መባባል ባለመቻላችን ብቻ እንደሆነ ነዉ ቴዲ አፍሮ ደስ በሚያሰኝ ቃና የገለጸልን።
እርስ በርስ መገዳደል፣ እርስ በርስ መባላት አይበቃንም ወይ ነዉ ያለንን። እጀ ለእጃችን ከተያያዝን ፣ አንድ ከሆንን፣ በዘር በሃይማኖይት ካተከፋፈልን፣ ከግል ጥቅማችን አልፈን ለወገናችን ካሰብን የኢትዮጵያ ትንሳዬ ቅርብ እንደሚሆንና እግዚአብሄር አምላክም እንደሚታረቀን ነዉ ያስተማረን። በዚህ ዜማ ኢትዮጵያዊነትን አይቻለሁ። ፍቅርንና መተባበርን አሸትቻለሁ።
ይህ ብቻ አይደለም። ወደ አሜሪካ ከተመለስኩኝ በኋላ አንድ ወዳጄ ቤት እራት ተጋበዝኩኝ። በርካታ ሰዎች ነበሩ። ለካ ሌላ ተመሳሳይ ዘፈን ቴዲ አፍሮ ከዚህ በፊት አዉጥቶ ኖሯል ቀልቤን የሳበ በቪዲዮ የተቀነባበረ ዜማ ለማዳመጥ ቻልኩኝ። በዲዝኒ ኦስትራሊያ ኦሎምፒክ ወቅት ወገኖቻችን ያሳዩት አኩሪ ዉጤት ላይ ያተኮረና በምሳሊያዊነት የመያያዝንና የመደጋገፍን ጥቅም ለማሳየት የሞከረበት የዜማ ቅንብር ነበር።
አንጋፋዉ ሃይሌ ገብረ ስላሴ እግሩን በመታመሙ ወደ ኃላ ሲቀርና ቀነኒሳና ስለሺ ወደ ኃላ እርሱን ሲመለከቱ ነዉ ቪዲዮዉ የሚያሳየዉ። ወንድማቸዉ ወደ ኃላ በመቅረቱ ዉስጣቸዉ አዝኖ እግራቸዉ ወደፊት እየሮተ አይናቸዉ ወደ ኋላ ይመለከት ነበር። ሃይሌ ገብረስላሴ ፡
“ መርቆ ሸኝቶን አገር
አሲዞን ሰንድቅ አላማ
መርዶ ነዉ ለወገናችን
ማሸነፍ ካቃተንም
ብሰለፍ ሕመሜን ችዬ
እሮጬ ላራሩጣችሁ
ትልቁን እምነት በናንተ
ጥለናል እንግዲህ አይዟቹህ”
ሲላቸዉ ስለሺና ቀነኒሳ ደግሞ በተራቸዉ
“እዮሃ ከባንዲራዉ ነዉ
እዮሃ ቃልኪዳናችን
እዮሃ አታፍርም በኛ
እዮሃ ኃይሌ አባታችን “
እያሉ ኢትዮጵያን እንዲሁም “አባታቸዉን” ሃይሌን ሲያኮሩ እናያለን።
አንዱ ሲደክም ሌላዉ እያገዘ፣ አንዱ ሲወድቅ ሌላዉ እየተነሳ፣ በህብርት፣ በወንድማማችነት፣ እርስ በርስ በመታያየትና በመያያዝ አገራችንን ከዉርደት ማንሳት እንደሚቻል ነዉ የምንማረዉ። የኢትዮጵያን አረንጓዴ ፣ ቢጫ ቀይ ባንዲራ ከሌሎች አገራት ባንዲራዎች ከፍ ብላ እንድትዉለበለብ ማድረግ እንደሚቻል ነዉ ቴዲ አፍሮ ለማሳየት የሞከርዉ። ምሳሌዉ እሩጫ ሆነ እንጂ በሁሉም መስክ ፍቅርና አንድነት ካለን ቀዳሚ ያምንሆንበት ምክንያት የለም።
ታዲያ እንደዚህ ኢትዮጵያዊ የሆኑና የሚያነቃቁ፣ አገራችን ኢትዮጵያ ታላቅ ለመሆን ያላትን አቅም የሚያጎላ፣ የአንድነትን፣ የፍቅርን፣ የሰላምን የይቅርታን መልእክትን ይዞ የሚመጣን ወጣት ማሰርና ማንገላታት እጀግ በጣም የሚያሳስብና የሚያስቆጣ ድርጊት ነዉ።
“መንገደኛ በመኪና ገጭተሃል” በሚል ክስ ነዉ ገዚዉ ፓርቲ ይህን ወጣት በቁጥጥር ስር ያዋለዉ። በርግጥ መንግስት መረጃ ኖሮት ነዉን? ወይስ ይህ ሰዉ እነርሱ እንዲሰማ የማፈልጉትን መልእክቶች በማቅረቡ ? በርግጥ ሕግ የበላይ መሆን ስላለበት ነዉን? ወይስ ሕግን እንደ ዱላ ተጠቅሞ የተቀየሙትንና የማይሰማማቸዉን ሰዉ ለማፈንና ለማስወገድ ስለተፈለገ ነዉ? በኢትዮጵያ ፍትህ እንዲሰፍን ፣ ሁሉም በሕግ ፊት እኩል ስለሆኑ ነዉን ? ወይስ በኢትዮጵያዊነት ላይ ያነጣጠረ ጥቃት ? መልሱን በቅርብ ጊዜ ዉስጥ የምናየዉ ይሆናል።
እስከዚያዉ ግን ለዚህ ወጣት ያለኝን አድናቆት በመግለጽ እግዚአብሄር ባለበት ቦታ ጽናቱንና ብርታቱን እንዲሰጠዉ እጸልያለሁ። ኢትዮጵያዉያን ወደ እግዚአብሄር እንድንቀርብ፣ እግዚአብሄር ለሚወደዉ ፍቅር ልባችንን እንድናስገዛ ላደረገዉና ለሚያደርገዉ አስተዋጽኦ እግዚአብሄር ይባርከዉ እለዋለሁ።

To those of you who are saying that it is not possible to hit and run in Addis:
You are writing without knowing the case. If you have read the story, the accident had happened at 2 or 3 am after mid night. Are you saying that Teddy can not do that even if he was drunk?
Try to be reasonable and do not imagine that it is only a retaliation. Your arguement is based on the assumption that Teddy can not commit any crime. It is a likely possibility. But, we can also question if the charges and the report at the time by some newspapers that Teddy had admitted during the first police interrogation was geniine.
The problem with us Ethiopians is we are only ready to hear what we want to hear. I know most of you will judge me for the points I raised above as Woyane. This generalization and judging one by his ethnic/ linguistic background has been a detriment in the political processes in history. The lastest example is Kinijit’s lose of support by Tigreans and others ethnic groups for the same reason.

Why Teddy Afro in Prison?? Facts and truth.
Body: Teddy Afro as you all know is going to be spending this holiday in prison,he should been out this past week, but thanks to the Ethiopian prosecutors who had two years to build a case against him on that hit and run incident, two years and they haven’t build any thing, so they asked for more time, a week to be exact and why is that?? so Teddy can spent the holiday away from his family and friends, which a total BS. I’ll tell you the reason why he’s in prison? is not that hit a run or anything like that, last year during the Ethiopian Millennium Teddy had the biggest concert in the history of Ethiopian music, a huge event, it was the first time he performed in two years in his home land. The ambiance was great, his fans were all over the place. Before the event the promoters made it clear to Teddy Afro not sing his hit song “Yastasryal” which happened to be the name of his album, too. He signed a contract stating that he wasn’t going to sing it, however like the true artist he is, he sang it and pleased his fans. After that, I knew they were going to punish him but the question when and how?I didn’t know, so I guess the worst thing you could do to a person is to put him in the slammer away from his family and friends during this great Easter Holiday. He will be out and his tours schedule will continue as planned, no sweat here. His Easter gift to his fans is the Fassika song which u could download from my page for free.
